Meet the Adventure Dogs
Every great adventure is made 1000x better with your best friends by your side : )
Did you know that the Victoria SPCA turned us down and told us we were unfit to adopt?
I know, it shocked us too. So, we turned around and adopted our first pup from the SPCA in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).
Meet Dahlia... on the left...
Dogs in TCI are known as potcakes. The name came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving.
She came into our lives in February 2012 when a lovely couple flew her from TCI all the way to Vancouver, where we picked her up around 1am. We then slept in the car at the ferry terminal for a few hours before making it back to Victoria with our first dog.
And within a year, I fell in love with a sick little fluffy ball of unknown mixture. Maybe sheltie/collie mixed with something else. Maybe husky mix. But, he was all cute.
Meet Kona... on the right...
It turns out, Kona is "incorgnito"... a corgi/malamute mix. We thought our second dog would be about 25 lbs, but he turned out to be just a bit under Dahlia in weight, and all muscle.
So far these two have been rockstars for all the new forms of travel they're experiencing; trains, planes and automobiles! And they are really adjusting well to European life so far...well...if as in 'so far' you consider we've been homebase-ing at the Hilton - ha ha!
The prep required to bring the dogs overseas was pretty straightforward, but comes with this own unique set of wrinkles. Kelly will be writing about this in another post, but let us know if you have any questions!! (We feel like subject matter experts in foreign animal transit now! LOL!)
We're off to see the famous Netherland Tulips today, so stay tuned for some super cute doggo pics!!
