Seefeld Olympiaregion: Why You Should Go There NOW.
Spontaneity is truly the best kind of adventure!
We first encountered the Seefeld Olympiaregion in the summer of 2015 on a whim. Back then, we had no idea what to expect, no accommodations booked, and very limited German skills. But, in the end, none of that even mattered thanks to this wonderfully welcoming community perched at 1,180m above sea level.
This town is the definition of 'darling' (and sporty, if you're up for it!). There are no major resorts or chain hotels here. The cafes and restaurants here have been been successfully making bellies happy for decades. The locals move slowly, people speak very quietly, and there's never any rush. Hospitality is the main industry here, and they've been doing it (exceptionally well) for over a century. In fact, this area has been populated as far back as prehistoric times, and has hosted the Winter Olympics a total of 3 times. It's no wonder they excel at hospitality!!
But the Region is not just all about making a traveler feel at home, it's also about getting butts outside to play and explore! Here are our favourtes:
Leutasch
A very traditional Austrian municipality, where local customs and rural culture are still very much part of everyday life. The area is situated at 1,136 metres above sea level, and is absolutely charming! Leutasch was brand new to us, and boy were we kicking ourselves that we didn't stumble on it sooner.
If we were climbers, I'm sure that we could have easily spent the entire month here without getting bored. This area is seriously a climbers paradise!
It's hard to believe, but when we started hitting the scenic and mountainous trails here at the beginning of June, there was still so much snow pack many of the passes were still snowed in, and few trails were actually open. In fact, the snow made it so cold that we were wearing full-on winter gear: puffy jackets, gloves and toques! (Kelly still rocked the shorts though...because he's Ultra-Canadian like that 😉)
A far cry from the incredible and overwhelming heat that hit later in the month which broke records with temperatures in the low to mid 40's. (Which was unreal!)
Our friends from Germany even joined us for a few fun-filled days! Where we learned about regional cuisine, schnapps, and Marcus learned that you can avoid falling into a muddy bog if you just use the washroom right around the corner... 😏 (Although, finding Marcus in knee deep mud WAS pretty funny!)
Here's a list of all the hikes in the area - We can't recommend this 16km slice of outdoor adventure enough!
Seefeld
As I mentioned above, the alpine town of Seefeld is just darling. Add to this its cute charm and its 2,000+ metre summits, and you have a perfect recipe for fun adventure anytime of the year!
The views from the surrounding summits here (if you're up for hiking) are some of the best around! In fact, this is the kind of nature that is truly astonishing. It takes your breath away. The mountains surround you in a perfect 360 degree panorama that is so unreal to behold, it almost doesn't seem real.
The dogs give this town multiple tail wags too. We actually stayed the night in Seefeld one weekend (@ Hotel Stefanie) to escape the heat in the Landeck valley during the June heatwave.
The dogs loved sitting on a patio with us, enjoying the shade, and drinking ice cold water while we enjoyed our wine with ice! And we loved having access to a beautiful pool and mineral spa!!
